CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

We had only just finished compiling the notes from Gemma's interview when there was a knock on the door. Ezra strolled in, hands in his pockets. He stared up at the ceiling, muttering to himself as if trying to figure something out. His brow creased in concentration. When he finally glanced at us, he blinked as if surprised we were there.

"Thanks for meeting with us," I said.

"No problem." He plopped down in the seat Gemma had recently vacated.

My stomach growled, distracting me. But I wasn't the only one who seemed distracted at that moment.

"You all right, Ezra?" I asked. "You seem preoccupied."

Ezra blinked, shaking his head as if dragging himself back to the present.

"Sorry. Just super excited about the app," he said. "I keep itching to go see how it's handling the small group. If it goes well, then I'm going to send out a broader request for beta testers. So, don't take this the wrong way. I know how important investigating what happened to Bram is. But all I want to do right now is rush for my computer."

"Totally get it," I said. "We'll try and make this quick for you, all right?"

Ezra nodded, giving one of his easy-going smiles that was marred by the distracted look in his eyes as he waited for us to get going. I could tell his mind was in a dozen different places.

"How well did you know Bram?" I asked.

Ezra shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "I didn't really know him. He seemed all right, though maybe not my type of person."

That wasn't exactly what Gemma had suggested, but it wasn't entirely out of line, either. Maybe she had just misinterpreted incompatibility with hostility.

"Have you two run into one another in the past?" I asked.

Ezra frowned, brow furrowing, then shrugged. "Maybe? If I have, it was a while ago. I don't remember any memorable interactions with him or anything."

"Can you think of anyone here who might have a grudge against him or want to kill him?"

Ezra rubbed his nose, then shook his head. "Not really, sorry. I try not to butt into other people's business if I can help it. So if he had beef with anyone, I didn't know about it."

This line of inquiry wasn't really going anywhere. I moved on.

"What were you up to the night Bram was killed?" I asked.

Ezra chuckled drily. "Those are always the fun questions, aren't they? That night, I was actually in here working on my app. I was super close and I could see the end of the tunnel, so I pushed through and kept working. Didn't realize it until after I was finished that it was nearly 4 in the morning."

"Night owl, eh?" I said. When Ezra nodded, I continued. "You didn't hear anything?"

"Nah, I had my headphones on. And after I finished, I went back to the cabin and passed out until everyone was woken up when they found the body."

"Not much sleep, then," I said.

"Eh, I'm used to pulling all-nighters. I managed.
